Government postpones first year commemorative events for Wednesday, 18 August

The forecast had been for heavy rains as Tropical Storm Grace was on the same path as TS Fred. The Abinader administration announced the postponing of the National Assembly events and rendering of accounts for its first year in government. The events were postponed for Wednesday, 18 August. The President also canceled his weekend agenda that would have taken him to Puerto Plata.

Another matter that captured the President’s attention was Haiti, hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in southwestern Haiti on Saturday, 14 August at 8:30am. The earthquake struck southwestern Haiti. Reports as of 14 August and more than 1,200 deaths and billions in destroyed buildings and homes are reported. As reported, Les Cayes, Jeremie and Anse à Veaux, were the hardest hit.

Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry declared a one month national state of emergency to tally the extent of damages and international aid requirements.

The Dominican government was prompt in sending in humanitarian aid by air, land and sea. Immediately, food rations and medicines were sent via ships that departed Cabo Rojo and Manzanillo ports, the closest to Haiti.

The President had also said he would be taking a two-week vacation after the 16 August rendition, a first for a Dominican President. This vacation apparently is also postponed indefinitely.
