Hope for reducing traffic jams: Trucks will not pay tolls to circulate on beltway

The secretary general of the city government of the National District, transport expert Hugo Beras announced that cargo trucks will soon be banned from circulating in the capital city from 6am to 8pm. The measure affects 3,000-4,000 cargo trucks that at present are circulating in the city, adding to the traffic jams. Many of these trucks are not depositing cargo in the city, but rather just crossing through on the way to destinations in the east, north or south.

Diario Libre says its sources indicate the plan is also that the freight trucks will be exempt from tolls to motivate that they use the Santo Domingo beltway instead. The beltway was built to decongestion city traffic.

The actions would be part of a pilot plan that is drafted by transport experts of the city government, the Ministry of Public Works, the National Land Transport Institute (Intrant), business representatives and the InterAmerican Development Bank.

The date for the new actions is yet to be announced.

Diario Libre and El Dia dedicated editorials to the traffic jams in Greater Santo Domingo.
