An official Qatar government delegation is in the Dominican Repbublic for a working visit from Tueday, 25 January through Friday, 28 January 2022. Qatar Foreign Affairs Minister Soltan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi heads the delegation that visits to look into opportunities for investment and cooperation.

The newly appointed head of the Investment Promotion Cabinet, Vice President Raquel Peña, shared a welcome dinner at the Presidential Palace for the mission on Tuesday evening. Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez accompanied her; Industry & Commerce Minister Víctor (Ito) Bisonó; Public Health Minister Daniel Rivera; Director of the National Health Insurance Plan (Senasa), Santiago Hazim; and Dominican ambassador in Qatar, Georges Bahsa Hazim.

The high-level mission will also meet with President Abinader and hold other meetings with Vice President Peña, ministers and other officials.

Other members of the mission are: Issa bin Mohammed Al Mannai, director of American Affairs; Yaser Awad Al-Abdulla, chargé d’affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Qatar in Santo Domingo; Salman Nabet Al Khulaifi, chairman of the Department of South America and the Caribbean at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They are accompanied by important authorities, advisors, representatives and investors.

The visit is a follow up to the November 2021 visit by Vice President Raquel Peña to Qatar.

In April, President Abinader had spoken by telephone with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Zani, about possible Qatari investments in the Dominican Republic, as well as other opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.

Subsequently, Vice President Peña visited the emirate last November, where Emir Al Zani received her.

On that trip, the Vice President held meetings with authorities in health, trade, education, and with the CEO of Qatar Airways, Akbar al Baker.

The Qatari delegation arrived in the Dominican Republic from Panama, where the Emirate’s officials held meetings with local authorities and visited the Panama Canal facilities.
