The National Police has instructed its members to participate in Catholic and Evangelical church services. An internal memorandum signed off by the director-general of the Police, Eduardo Alberto Then orders the different regional directorates to select “commissions of police members to participate in the Sunday masses and services” of the Catholic and Evangelical churches.
In another memorandum, the National Police asks for the directorates to send to the office of the director-general a Monday report with data on the agents in churches and photos of the activities.
Memorandum #17080, dated 20 May 2022, instructs the agents to receive religious orientation and integrate themselves to this wholesome work of our society, which will allow them to interact with citizens of good faith.
The request, from Major General Eduardo Alberto Then, was reissued in a 7 June memo that calls for the commanders of each jurisdiction to coordinate in all the areas under their respective commands to select commissions of police officers who will attend the services held by Catholic and Evangelical churches.
After the memos went viral, the spokesman of the National Police, Diego Pesqueira, explained that the provision of police participation in Sunday church services is not mandatory.
