Dominican sugar sector denies charges of forced labor

Democratic congressmen from the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Commerce leveled charges against the Dominican sugar producers last week, accusing them of using “forced labor” in their fields.

As a result, a joint communiqué was issued by the three principle sugar producers, La Romana, the Vicini Group and the Consorcio Azucarero Central, stating in no uncertain terms the false claims of the congressmen from Oregon and Michigan. The joint statement said that at the end of each year’s harvest, the entire industry has certificates of compliance in quality and sustainability that comply with the United Nations, and the World Labor Organization’s human rights indicators. At the same time, the companies also noted their social activity which are reflected in the lives of their workers. Of course, the Democratic congressmen doubled down on their accusations, saying that “they had talked to people.”
