Fake news: Automated video says El Piro was killed

Fake news circulated last week that Somos Pueblo’s popular Eduardo Sanchez Tolentino (El Piro) had been killed in a shootout in Guaricano in northern Santo Domingo. Ricardo Ripoll and El Piro had led a protest against luxury wages and increases to officials in the government electricity sector at a time when the government is significantly raising electricity rates. Ripoll said the fake video sought to intimidate those who protested the increases in the electricity sector. Ripoll called for the government security forces to investigate the fake news reported in the Mundo Informativo automated audio.

The protests originated after the power distributors actual rate increases went beyond the announced 9% increases. Many households and businesses experienced 40 to 100% increases in their billings.

President Luis Abinader ordered the July quarterly rate increase to be reset to the previous quarter increase rates.
