Blockbuster deal for Julio Rodriguez

Julio Rodriguez, the 22-year old Dominican baseball player, and almost certainly the American League Rookie-of-the-Year, has just inked the most spectacular contract in the history of Major League Baseball. His contract for the next seven years has been set at US$30 million per year, or US$210 million.

In the contract, there are clauses that provide for an extension until 2039 for another RD$260 million, a total of US$470 million.

No Alex Rodriguez, Mike Trout, David Ortiz or anyone for that matter has ever seen these numbers.

But, there are very few who have ever burst upon the scene in such spectacular fashion: 20 home runs and over 20 stolen bases in his first 108 games in the major leagues.

The Seattle Mariners announced the deal in Cleveland this weekend, and there are guarantees until the 2034 season.

Rodriguez has already been to the All Star game, in his first-ever year in the bigs, and is currently batting .269, 20 homers, 23 stolen bases, 64 RBIs and an on-base-percentage of .799. With his input, it seems almost certain that Seattle will reach the post-season this year, putting an end to the longest drought in its history.
