City government and Intrant launch effort to get people to not hog up streets with parking

The National District Plan, “Park Right” was launched on 14 September 2022 in Santo Domingo. The goal is that people read the signs that say “no parking” and believe them. The effort seeks to put a stop to parallel parking that is hogging up streets, especially in the Polígono Central, the most important commercial and residential district of the capital city.

Several tow trucks are part of the Plan “Parquéate Bien” and have instructions to remove vehicles illegally parked.

The effort seeks to reduce traffic congestion in the capital city. It is a concerted effort of the Mayor’s Office of the National District, the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) and the Transit Safety and Land Transportation Agency (Digesett). The government entities signed an agreement on Wednesday, 14 September 2022 and say the plan kicks off on Monday 26 September 2022.

From that date on, vehicles parked in prohibited zones will be towed by the six tow trucks assigned to the operation. The vehicles can be picked up at Av. Tiradentes # 17. The task falls under the new Association of Parking and Mobility Managers (Agemov).

The pilot project will be applied in 13 streets of the Polígono Central, the prime commercial district of the capital city. The pilot project will be honed and taken to other city areas and then to the the municipalities of the province of Santo Domingo.

In its first stage, the pilot project “Parquéate Bien” will cover the following streets: Poncio Sabater, Francisco Carias Lavandier, Respaldo 22, José Amado Soler, Calle 5, Pablo Casals, Manuel Henríquez, Boy Scout, Jacinto Mañón, Del Seminario, Fernando Escobar, Filomena Gómez de Coba and Calle Z.

Hugo Beras, director of Intrant, said: “The no parking is like one of the invisible signs here, it’s there, but people don’t care. The decision has already been made and we thank the Digesett, General Guzmán Peralta for all the collaboration and for the effort he is putting with the team, the companies, with us, the Mayor’s Office and the private sector,” he explained.

Carolina Mejía indicated that more than a year ago she submitted to the Council of Aldermen a project for the Polígono Central to have one-way streets and to allow parking only to the right in the direction of that road.

“Here what we are seeking is that we respect both horizontal and vertical signage and we, as authorities intend to make people comply by generating a regime of consequence so that people understand that they should not park where it is prohibited. The goal is not to generate new citizen awareness,” said Mayor Carolina Mejía.

The director of the Digesett, General Ramon Antonio Guzman Peralta, says drivers must observe the signs before parking so that they are not fined for violation of Law 63-17.

“As of Monday, 26 September we will begin to move all vehicles that are parked in prohibited zones,” he said. He warned that in order to get their vehicles back, the owners will have to comply with certain requirements.
