Ministry of Energy backs installation Turkish power barge

The Ministry of Energy & Mines continues to back aspirations of a Turkish firm to install energy-generation barges in Azua. Environmental, tourism, farming and community organizations say the power barge will cause damaging contamination.

Energy Minister Antonio Almonte told Diario Libre that the government has not desisted from its support to the installing of the electric barge in Azua. The Energy Minister says it could still be another three weeks for the company to obtain its environmental license. At the time, new electricity lines and electricity transmission poles are being installed.

The electricity-generating Karadeniz Powership barge would be installed in the vicinity of the community of Los Negros, in the province of Azua, according to the Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Almonte. The barge would have capacity to add 178 megawatts to the national grid.

Almonte indicated that the authorities of the Ministry of the Environment are concluding the technical evaluation of the request for the environmental license. He said that the institution he heads continues to dialogue with the community of Los Negros on the issue of the location of the plant.
