New attraction in Santo Domingo: Museum of History & Geography

Learn interesting details on the history and geography of the Dominican Republic during a visit to the newly renovated Museum of History and Geography at the Plaza de la Cultura in Santo Domingo. Vice President Raquel Peña and Culture Minister Milagros German attended the inauguration of the renovated museum on Monday, 19 December 2022. The museum is open from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Jose Guerrero Sanchez is the museum director.

Visitors can see for themselves the piano on which Maestro José Reyes composed the music of the National Anthem, the table on which the first Dominican Constitution was signed in San Cristóbal and the tombstone that covered the remains of the Fathers of the Fatherland at the Puerta del Conde.

Also on exhibit is the chair and cane of Francisco del Rosario Sánchez; oil portraits of 54 presidents of the Republic; the vehicle that is the only proof of Dictator Trujillo’s assassination.

The new National History & Geography Museum is located next door to the Museum of Dominican Man that also was renovated and reopened in December 2022.

A volunteer organization is set up to oversee the upkeep of the National History and Geography Museum. Marcial Najri is the president of the board of volunteers.

The National Museum of History and Geography first opened on 1 March 1982. It had been closed for renovations.

During the past government of Danilo Medina, former Culture Minister Eduardo Selman directed the renovations costing RD$809 million. These include a new surveillance system, fire protection system, air conditioning, windproof and solar-protected windows.
