President Luis Abinader sent out some last minute business at the tail end of 2022. The most commented one was Decree 733-22 that came as a surprise and created a holiday for Monday, 2 January 2023.
On 30 December 2022, President Luis Abinader ordered extending the New Year holiday. Monday, 2 January would also be a holiday. This gave people time to recover on 1 January before thousands that had traveled to tourism destinations and to visit family and friends in the interior headed back to the cities. The government ordered that the traditional “carreteo,” or the slow patrols be on Monday, instead of Sunday, 1 January as originally scheduled.
The Center for Emergency Operates estimated that 6.5 million persons mobilized on local roads over the Christmas-New Year holiday 2022-2023 period.
The Presidency was criticized for the last minute decision that affected thousands of businesses that would have to pay extra time if their employees worked on 2 January. It also affected production schedules of many industries.
In January there will be three more long weekends since 9 January (Three Kings Day) and 30 January (Duarte Birthday) are already on the calendar by law.
This makes just 19 working days (Monday-Friday) in January 2023.
