Only JCE can collect and store civil status data

A recently enacted Organic Civil Status Acts Law 4-23 gives commercial banks, telecommunication companies, private companies, and government entities other than the Central Electoral Board (JCE) 60 days to eliminate their biometric databases. The law only authorizes the JCE to capture, store and process the information on people in the Dominican Republic. A ruling is yet to be passed to implement the law.

The new law replaces Law 659 dating back to 1944. It also has provisions regulating late birth declarations and the order of the parents’ last names.
