
Osiris de Leon, the country’s outspoken geologist and earthquake expert, tweeted the preliminary reading of 5.0 magnitude earthquake on Sunday, 29 January 2023. The earthquake was felt around 2:35 pm, but no casualties or damage have been reported.
The earthquake epicenter was in Factor, in the northeastern province of Maria Trinidad Sanchez. A preliminary epicenter north of Villa Rivas and northwest of Arenoso, in the Septentrional fault.
The earthquake was felt in Smana, Nagua, Sánchez, Samaná, Las Terrenas, Pimentel, Castillo, Hostos, Monte Plata, Santo Domingo, and many other communities in the northeast.
The US Geological Survey posted the intensity of the earthquake was 4.3 magnitude.
