The best of carnival from all around the Dominican Republic is congregating on the sea-fronting Malecón of Santo Domingo starting 2pm on Sunday, 26 February 2023. Around 150 groups representing the country’s North, South and East regions will participate. The Ministry of Culture had previously announced the parade would be on Sunday, 5 March.
“This is everyone’s carnival, that is why we are working on the reinforcement of security, to return this great celebration to the families,” Culture Minister Milagros Germán had announced.
Likewise, the Santo Domingo Hotels Association has set aside a special area for tourists.
The Ministry of Culture organizes the event, with the collaboration of the City of Santo Domingo. Deputy Mayor Staline Alcántara is the president of the Carnival Committee. Samanta Olivero is the director of the Carnival Department at the Ministry of Culture.
Likewise, Culture Minister Germán had announced on 7 February that the Santiago folklorist Rafael Almánzar Mármol and Diomary Celeste Castillo (Diomary La Mala) are the king and queen of the carnival.
In the press conference on Friday, 10 February, the city government of Santo Domingo said that the event would honor the late Patricia Ascuasiasti, who was juror of the parade for more than 36 years. Previously, the Ministry of Culture had dedicated the event to Vitico Erarte, one of the creators of the Santiago carnival.
