After defeating the all-stars team of Argentina to qualify for the FIBA World Cup, the Dominican Republic is now set on making the cut for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The Dominican Republic has qualified to the FIBA World Cup on three occasions, including making the cut in 2023. But the Dominican basketball team has never played in an Olympic Games.
As of 2020, qualification for the Olympic Games is through the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
According to FIBA, the top two placing teams per continent in the Basketball World Cup automatically qualify, as does the host country, France. At the World Cup, the top two teams from the Americas will qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. That is, the seven spots will include two teams from Americas, two teams from Europe, one team from Africa, one team from Asia and one team from Oceania.
The four remaining places in the 12-team Olympic field are reserved for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024, with two rounds of Qualifying Tournaments for Paris 2024.
The first round, the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournaments will be played at the continental level and will produce five teams who will go through to the second round, the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournaments 2024.
Twenty-four teams will be participating in four Olympic Qualifying Tournaments with the three highest-placed teams from Africa, Americas, and Asia/Oceania will be selected after the 16 highest-placed teams from the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, and five teams through the pre-qualifying tournaments. The winner of each tournament will qualify for the Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament.
The next Olympic Games will occur in Paris in 2024 from 26 July to 11 August.
The DR will next play against Team USA in Las Vegas on 7 August 2023 to prepare for the World Cup.
President Luis Abinader has on agenda for Thursday, 2 March 2023 to receive the Dominican basketball team at the Presidential Palace to personally congratulate them for the impressive win.
