Presidency Minister Joel Santos meets with US State Department official

Presidency Minister Joel Santos met last week with visiting Barbara Feinstein, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Caribbean Affairs and Haiti of the US State Department. Listin Diario reports the main topic was the situation in Haiti and the international response that is urgently needed. Listin Diario reports that also discussed were the port and industry developments in Montecristi, where the Manzanillo Development program promises to revitalize the northwestern coast, at the border with Haiti.

Since Haiti is perhaps the second most important trading partner of the Dominican Republic, it is incumbent upon this government to seek all the help it can get to settle the issues in that clearly failed state, reports Listin Diario.

Feinstein was said to be well aware of the importance of the Manzanillo project for the entire area, and expressed her views that the plan would attract major investments in the area. With the signing of diplomatic relations with China, that country had signed an agreement to finance and develop the Manzanillo project, but this was objected by the US government that led to US involvement in the Manzanillo project.
