A team led by Dominican-Spanish archaeologist Adolfo Lopez continues to carry out research at a Samana site said to be over 5000 years old. Working in collaboration with the Dominican Academy of Sciences and the Garcia Arevalo Foundation, the site “completely changes our view of the first inhabitants of the Antilles,” Lopez told Listin Diario.
Instead of what were considered to be bands of poorly organized nomads, the site is evidence the groups of people were settled and organized. The researchers used carbon-14 dating to place the age of the site.
The research also includes seeds and other artifacts that contribute to the possibility that this was a stable group of humans that had a varied diet, and may well have employed agricultural processes.
