Centroamerica Cuenta literary festival starts 16 May in Santo Domingo

Centroamérica Cuenta is the most important literary festival in the Central American region. On the occasion of its 10th anniversary for the first time the event will be held from 16 to 21 May in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is a member of the Central American Integration System (SICA), a regional bloc. Nicaragua, Guatemala and Costa Rica have hosted the past editions.

The event is free to the general public yet limited by the number of spaces at the chosen venues. Registration is available online. The festival is an important space for culture, for the debate of ideas and reflection. The organizers call it an intellectual treat, a stimulus to writers, and a platform to project and disseminate Dominican and Central American literature.

Minerva del Risco of the Rene del Risco Foundation is the spokesperson for the organizers. Del Risco told Diario Libre that the festival’s founder himself, Nicaraguan writer and journalist Sergio Ramirez requested that the event be held here. The regime of Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua divested Ramirez of his Nicaraguan nationality in February 2023.

Del Risco told Diario Libre that the organizing of the event and its celebration this month is a dream she has had for many years since she started attending Latin American literary festivals and seeing how important these are for literature.

Leading Dominican and regional representatives for literature, journalism and thought will exchange ideas in dialogues and talks, which are the central activities of this edition. There will also be workshops and book presentations with the participation of around 60 international and 24 local intellectuals.

The inauguration of Centroamérica Cuenta will take place on 16 May 2023 at the Auditorium of the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic. On the same day there will be activities at the Centro Cultural León in Santiago. Workshops and dialogues will take place at the Indotel Convention Center, in the Colonial City, from 17 May to 20 May. The program will end with events at the Cinemateca Nacional in the Plaza de la Cultura on 21 May.
