Calls for finding a solution to sargassum in the seas

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili highlighted the Dominican Republic’s tourism achievements during the opening of the World Tourism Organization Executive Council meeting in Punta Cana on 17 May 2023. Pololikashvili praised the rapid recovery of the Dominican tourism industry from the Covid-19 pandemic. He said the decisions and actions made the Dominican Republic a “world benchmark for tourism.”

The UNWTO meeting gathered 19 tourism ministers and around 200 delegates from the member countries of the UNWTO to discuss progress, experiences, strategies and challenges for the industry’s future. More sustainable tourist destinations was the main theme.

During the event, Dominican Minister of Tourism David Collado called for the countries to unite to find solutions to sargassum the same way the world united to combat Covid-19. He said so far there is no solution and favored that the solution be found in the ocean, before the problem reaches the coasts. “The only way somebody will find a solution is if all the countries that are affected, and those that have the capacities and the technologies to find a solution, collaborate in solidarity.”
