
Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) presidential pre-candidate Abel Martinez now says he will be his own campaign manager. Recently, Francisco Javier García, the former minister of Tourism and many times successful presidential campaign manager for the PLD, announced that he was resigning after differences with Martinez.
Martínez, who is the successful mayor of Santiago de los Caballeros, says he is assuming the national coordination of his campaign to strengthen the campaign guidelines.
In a press release, he announced an advisory and consultative team, made up by former President of the Republic and president of the PLD, Danilo Medina, together with the also members of the Political Committee, Charles Mariotti, general secretary; Margarita Cedeño, former Vice President of the Republic; Francisco Domínguez Brito and Jaime David Fernández Mirabal, who will be accompanying the presidential candidate in the coordination of the campaign.
Meanwhile, the discussions continue on whether or not the dissenting Fuerza del Pueblo formed by former PLD president, former President Leonel Fernandez will unite presenting the PLD and FP a single presidential candidate in the May 2024 presidential election. The media focuses on the debate on if the parties unit, who will be the presidential candidate. Fernandez aspires to return to the Presidency in 2024. Fernandez was President from 1996-2000, and then 2004-2008 and 2008-2012. He sought to be the PLD candidate in 2020, but met with opposition from then President Danilo Medina, who backed his minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo.
The electoral schedule calls for the choosing of the presidential candidates in October 2023.
