Tropical Storm Bret: Looking good for the Dominican Republic

The effects of Tropical Storm Bret are not expected to be felt in the Dominican Republic until Friday at the earliest.

Meanwhile, a tropical wave is passing and for Thursday, 22 June 2023, the Weather Office (Onamet) forecasts showers with possible thundershowers for the northeastern region of Samaná and María Trinidad Sánchez and for the southern region, including Greater Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal and Peravia (Baní), especially in the early morning hours. Heavy downpours could occur in the afternoon with occasional wind gusts over the central provinces of Monseñor Nouel (Bonao), San Jose de Ocoa, La Vega, and Santiago Rodríguez and San Juan de la Maguana to the west.

Onamet says it is monitoring another tropical wave located a few hundred kilometers southwest of the Cape Verde Islands, with around 70% change of reaching hurricane category 1 in the next 48 hours. Onamet says the Dominican Republic is not on the path of forecasters for that storm.

In his update on Tuesday, 22 June, storm weather forecaster MikeFisher reported for DR1 Forums:

“Bret did not get its shape back or big power gains over night. Pressure dropped only to 1001mb; that’s not enough to gain hurricane wind force and anyway, it is missing the needed real swing and shape.

“It failed to grow strong during the time frame with the best conditions. It will be a TS over the Central Lesser Antilles tomorrow, and tracking patterns let it move W-WWNW through the central Caribbean Sea. That’s nicely away from us and it will not be more than a medium power TS. Chances are high that it will even go down to a TD while passing South of us.

“So, Saona Island Tours canceled for Saturday and Sunday and the cattle stays out and free.”

The US National Hurricane Center forecasts Tropical Storm Bret will approach the Lesser Antilles through Thursday and then move across those islands late Thursday as a strong tropical storm. There is a Tropical Storm Warning in effect for St. Lucia, Martinique and Dominica, with the risk of flooding from heavy rainfall, strong winds and dangerous waves along the coasts. A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for Barbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The hot summer temperatures will continue, despite the chilling effect of the tropical wave.
