Pedernales needs good roads to benefit from tourism

Economy Minister Pavel Isa Contreras told an audience that included Vice President Raquel Peña that improvements in the road network in the Southwest are needed for the region surrounding Lake Enriquillo to experience real economic and social development. Likewise, good roads would allow regional producers to send their products to local markets, he said.

When speaking of improvements in infrastructure, Isa Contreras says this encompasses improvements in public schools, modern farming techniques, and new and better water management for household use and irrigation. And to achieve the latter, a careful reforestation program for the watersheds of the local rivers is essential and is in the plan for the regional development of the Southwest and border provinces with Haiti.

Isa Contreras spoke at the Dialogue for Development that took place at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) campus in Barahona. Representatives of community groups from the region, including Neiba, Jimani, and Pedernales participated in the discussions.
