The people of Los Negros in southcentral Azua had protested and protested, and no one was hearing. Now it is obvious something needs to be fixed with the operation of the Karpowership barge. The inhabitants of the fishing community of Los Negros in Pueblo Viejo, Azua province are once again denouncing contamination by the large barge. They say the barge has spilled hundreds of gallons of fuel into the sea. The contamination is reaching shore, with a major impact on coastal and marine ecosystems and the economics of those living off fishing and tourism.
The people of Boca Chica in the Santo Domingo province had protested and impeded the barge’s installation. The barge, nevertheless, had the support of Energy Minister Antonio Almonte and he would authorize the installation in Azua, to the west of Santo Domingo.
Antonio Segura, director of the Municipal District of Puerto Viejo, in the province of Azua, told Hoy that while there were protests in the locality against installing the barge, the lack of consensus among all sectors caused the barge to be imposed.
He pointed out that political elements were introduced that prevented collective consensus, which the company took advantage of to get enough government support to install the plant.
The plant is the last straw of a series of companies that are suspect of contributing to the contamination in the area. These include the Opuvisa fuel terminal for the Dominican Petroleum Refinery, the Lear Investment generation plant, Monte Rio Power, and the unloading of clinker for cement production at Cementos Santo Domingo, a company owned by the Abinader family.
