Reports from the border with Haiti indicate that the Haitian authorities are now more flexible and are allowing Haitians to return to Haiti with goods purchased in the Dominican Republic. First, the Haitian authorities had shut the official gates on the Haitian side after the gates on the Dominican side were reopened. Then it was reported that goods were allowed through formal gates if the Haitians paid taxes, but now, reports are that foot traffic is being allowed with goods for sale in Haiti.
The restrictions to trade occurred after the Dominican government acted in protest of the unilateral construction of a detouring of the course of a river that is born in the Dominican Republic and flows for about two kilometers through Haiti before returning to its passing for another 53 km in the Dominican Republic.
In other updates on the situation with Haiti, it is now known that Dominican airlines and others are carrying out charter flights from Haiti to Nicaragua filled with Haitian travelers. One of the downsides of the shutdown of vehicular traffic and visa issuing to the Dominican Republic is its impact on the thousands of Haitians who would cross over the border to take international flights from Dominican airports.
Furthermore, Dominican egg producers say the shutdown of the border has caused them millions in losses as the goods are perishable. The government has offered to purchase the chicken-laying hens. The feeding of these is costly. The producers fear a collapse in egg prices, below sustainable costs.
The situation in Haiti keeps getting worse. Between 1 July and 30 September 2023, the Haitian national police recorded 1,239 homicides, compared to 577 in the same period in 2022.
