United Nations hosts regional course on the proliferation of biological weapons in Santo Domingo

The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), with the participation of authorities from Latin America and the Caribbean, in collaboration with the ministries of Defense and Foreign Relations of the Dominican Republic, began on Wednesday, 25 October 2023, regional training in biological weapons prevention. National Contact Points from 19 countries are participating in the two-day course at the Barcelo Santo Domingo Hotel.

The course seeks to educate in the main challenges and the status of the application of the biosecurity safety measures within the framework of United Nations Security Council Resolution 15-40, which prevents the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons.

During the opening, Ambassador Ramón Quiñones, director of Security and Defense of the Ministry of Foreign Relations (Mirex), highlighted: “Covid-19 highlighted the vulnerability of countries to biological threats, that we do not have the capabilities to face them on a smaller and/or larger scale, so there is a need to have greater preparation for these common objectives in the region,” he noted.
