Interested in the government contract for the Las Americas (SDQ), Puerto Plata (POP), Samana (AZS) airport contracts? A “bad” contract will mean higher airport fees for travelers. Now Diario Libre reporters have been looking into what’s included in the announced renegotiation of the Aerodom-Vinci Airports contract.
The Aerodom contract has passed from company to company after the government granted an airport concession to the Hazoury brothers in 2000. The concession expires in 2030 and Vinci Airports seeks to extend it another 30 years through a complex renegotiation.
President Luis Abinader has said the country got nothing out of the past contract outside of not having to pay for the operation of the airport. President Abinader now says Vinci commits to pay upfront upwards of US$700 million that will be used for important infrastructure works. Many of these constructions have been announced on several occasions by the Presidency. The airport renegotiation would provide a needed fresh source of cash for the designated public works.
After Diario Libre highlighted that the renegotiation would mean an increase in fees for travelers, Vinci responded, quantifying the increase at RD$147.43.
The Presidency has sent the contract to the Chamber of Deputies for review.
