The first stage of the brand-new wharf at Cabo Rojo, in the province of Pedernales, at the southern tip of the Dominican Republic, is nearing completion. This major infrastructure project will allow the area to host huge cruise liners bringing thousands of tourists and crew members, mainly from the United States.
Authorities at the Dominican Port Authority (Apordom) say that by mid-January 2024 the contractors will have 200 meters of wharf ready to receive the large vessels. Everything should be prepared to receive passengers sometime around the New Year. Pedernales and its environs will never be the same again.
The Port Authority has announced that more than 100 cruise liners will arrive in Dominican ports this December 2023. Most cruise ships dock at Puerto Plata’s Amber Cove and Taino Bay locations. La Romana, Santo Domingo, and Samana are also due to receive dozens of the floating hotels.
So far this year, nearly two million passengers have arrived on cruise liners, a 75% increase over the previous year (2022).
