Julia Benoit sues for case that charged her with drug trafficking

65-year old Julia Benoit is suing for more than RD$30 million in damages. She was arrested at the Punta Cana International Airport when she was to take a flight to Brussels for medical care. She is now suing for charges and her arrest when there was not evidence to prove her involvement in the drug trafficking case. She would eventually be released, but the government has not been known to press charges for the real culprits in the case that apparently chose Julia Benoit as their victim.

Lawyer José Amado Ramírez has also filed the lawsuit for damages against the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD), the Higüey Prosecutor’s Office, the Punta Cana Airport, the Puntacana Group, the Attorney General’s Office and others.

The lawyer claims complicity in using his client’s identity to traffic the suitcases of cocaine.

It took two months of anguish for the woman to be released from the accusations. She was even sent to jail. Eventually the Court of San Pedro de Macoris ordered the definitive closure of the accusation because there was no evidence.

Surveillance video from the airport clearly showed others had placed the drugs in the luggage of the 65-year old woman. The prosecutors has not been known to press charges against others that would be responsible.
