Haitians and Dominicans throng bi-national market in Pedernales; Codevi back at work

Friday, 2 February 2024, is described in Listin Diario as “an encouraging day” as thousands of Haitians and Dominicans took part in the bi-national market. After six months of tension and serious disruptions of the cross-border commerce, it was certainly good news for both sides of the border to enjoy a peaceful and successful market at last.

Folks from Anse-a-Pitre and other communities in the south of Haiti flocked to the market.

All sorts of vehicles, ranging from small trucks to motorcycles, jammed the highway crossing the Pedernales border.

Dominican military along the border, the Specialized Frontier Security Corps (Cesfront), Migration, and Customs were very busy. Some Haitian authorities from Anse-a-Pitre, Banano, Guadon and Thiote claimed that Dominican agents were detaining workers crossing the border on their way to work on farms and earn a living as well as merchants trying to sell their goods. However, the hustle and bustle of the successful market day overshadowed the complaints, as reported in Listin Diario.

Reports are also that Codevi, the largest free zone manufacturing center in Haiti, and that employs around 14,000 Haitian workers at their Ouanaminthe plant near Dajabón, is back into manufacturing operations.
