JCE publishes list of candidates for muncipal elections

158 mayors will be elected in the Sunday, 18 February 2024 municipal elections. The Central Electoral Board (JCE) released the list of the candidates.

Diario Libre observes the municipal election campaign has been one with little statements from the candidates to mayor and city councilors on what they are going to do if they are elected.

The 2024 municipal election campaign comes to a close on Thursday, 15 February at midnight. Campaigning is banned on Friday, Saturday and Sunday into the 18 February election day.

In the National District, over the weekend ruling PRM candidate Luis Abinader campaigned for Carolina Mejia running for reelection as mayor in the National District and senator Guillermo Moreno. Leonel Fernandez, the strongest opposition contender, campaigned for Domingo Contreras running for capital city mayor and his candidate for senator for the National District, his son Omar Fernandez.

The municipal elections also serve to test the new automated systems in place in time for the more complex presidential and congressional elections on 19 May 2024.
