JCE on municipal election: First bulletin at 8pm, or when a voting station has reached 20% of the vote count

The president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Román Jáquez Liranzo, says the plan is for the first bulletin with the results of the municipal elections on Sunday, 18 February 2024 to be issued with the results counted at each polling station at 8pm or earlier as soon as a polling station has counted 20% of the votes cast.

The decision is contained in resolution 12-2024, which indicates that after the electoral boards begin to issue their bulletins (either when 20% of the votes are computed or after eight pm), they must update the results every 15 minutes until completing the count.

Voters will receive two ballots to vote for 158 mayors, and then others for 1,164 city councilors and 263 district directors.

There are 17,310 polling stations installed at 4,418 voting centers, mostly in public schools and government buildings. Voters can verify their assigned polling station at Verificate

Jaquez Liranzo called abstention the major challenge of the organizers of the 2024 election. 8.1 million Dominicans are eligible to vote.

The vote is open from 7am to 5pm. Voters need to mark the photo of the selected candidate with an X, + or line (-) for the vote to be valid.

The candidates mainly belong to two coalitions. One is led by the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and allies, and another led by the former ruling party Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) that is running for a selection of candidates together with the People’s Force, the PLD-dissident party of former three-time President Leonel Fernandez, with the support of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) of former Minister of Foreign Relations Miguel Vargas Maldonado.

As of Thursday, 15 February 2024 at midnight, all campaigning needs to be put on hold to give time to voters to reflect on who they will vote for. Likewise, as of Saturday, 17 February, alcoholic beverage sales are banned, except at hotels in tourist zones.
