The strange electoral case of Santo Domingo North

In the municipality of Santo Domingo North, the north area of Greater Santo Domingo, no mayor has been able to be reelected, Listin Diario reports. This time, it appears the winner is Betty Geronimo, running for mayor for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) coalition. She is the wife of a former mayor of Santo Domingo North, Francisco Fernández who was mayor from (2010-2016).

Carlos Guzman, the incumbent mayor elected for the People’s Force (FP) and who was running for the FP, PLD and PRD coalition, was not able to win his reelection bid. As of midnight, the vote turnout was 55.52 % to 43.64%.

Listin Diario explains that all the mayors of this municipality have sought reelection, yet no one has ever been able to achieve this. Recent mayors who sought reelection have been Daniel Carvajal Loise, (2002-2006); Jesús Félix (2006-2010); Betty Geronimo’s husband, Francisco Fernández (2010-2016); René Polanco (2016-2020) and Carlos Guzmán (2020-2024).
