Metro Line 1B construction to begin

President Luis Abinader on 6 March 2024 announced the start of construction of Line 1B of the Santo Domingo Metro, from the Florinda Florián (Mamá Tingo) station to Punta de Villa Mella in northern Santo Domingo.

He said that Metro line 1B will be built in response to the growing demand for efficient, safe and sustainable public transportation that is needed and required in these new times.

“This project not only promises to transform the urban mobility experience but also to catalyze a positive change in the quality of life for the inhabitants of Santo Domingo Norte, which has faced critical challenges in terms of transportation, marked by vehicle congestion and low quality,” he said in announcing the plans to start the Metro extension.

The line is expected to benefit some 373,000 who live in northern Santo Domingo.

The Metro expansion will cost US$187 million. The work should be completed in 36 months and cover 2.5 km. It includes two additional stations, one close to the Ramón Matías Mella Educational Center and the other in the community of San Felipe.
