Capitan Avispa sets record for a Dominican film in local cinemas

Capitán Avispa, the animated film created by the legendary Juan Luis Guerra, opened in cinemas in Santo Domingo on 5 April 2024 and the demand has been such that more screening rooms have had to be added, El Nuevo Diario reports. The music is by Juan Luis Guerra who enlisted fellow Latin American star singers Luis Fonsi and Juanes as voices.

The production is a pet project based on an idea by Juan Luis Guerra and took six years to reach cinemas. Animation is by Morgana Studios, with work in the Dominican Republic and Spain. The sound track is by Juan Luis Guerra.

The plot is about Capitán Avispa, the hero of Avispatrópolis and the Honey Kingdom, who puts to test his nobility, justice and innocence against the evil wasp Jacques Poison and his henchmen.

The film is directed by Juan Luis Guerra’s son, Jean Gabriel Guerra and Jonnathan Melendez.

Puerto Rican Luis Fonsi is the voice of Capitan Avispa and Colombian singer Juanes is the voice of Sargento Picadura. Juan Luis Guerra also chose fellow 4 x 40 singers Adalgisa Pantaleon (Reina Ada), and Roger Zayas (Alcalde Panales) as voices. Juan Luis Guerra (Leo Vespa), himself, is a voice.

Other voices in the film are Dominican Miss Universe 2003, Amelia Vega and Joy Huerta, Karen Martinez, Jose Guillermo Cortines, Hector Anibal, Blanca García and Edwin Sanchez.
