Second cruise ship arrives in soft opening of Port Cabo Rojo in Pedernales

The Holland America line cruise ship Nieuw Amsterdam with 1,935 passengers on board arrived on Monday, 8 April 2024 to Port Cabo Rojo, becoming the second to test the newest cruise ship sea port in the country. The ship has capacity for up to 2,106 visitors and 929 crew members.

The Dominican Republic ports in Puerto Plata (Amber Cove and Taino Bay ports), Samana Bay port and La Romana (Casa de Campo and Catalina Island) and the National District (Sans Souci) are seeing 67 cruise ship arrivals in April 2024, reported Jean Luis Rodriguez, Port Authority director.

Rodriguez says once in full operation, the southwestern Cabo Rojo Port will have capacity to receive around one million cruise ship travelers a year. In its first phase, Cabo Rojo is operating with 200 meters of dock and a mooring knot. The operator is ITM Group, the same company that operates Taino Bay in Puerto Plata, the most visited on the island.

A first cruise ship, the Norwegian Pearl, docked at the new port on 4 January 2024.
