Health Minister Victor Atallah urges actions to prevent dengue

Minister of Public Health Victor Atallah is on a media tour to encourage Dominicans to eliminate mosquito breeding household points to prevent dengue, the seasonal sickness. The illness is on the rise this year, more virulent and earlier than in other years.

Dr. Atallah, a cardiologist who practices functional medicine, urges people to stop the cause of the spread of the disease, the breeding of the transmitter, the mosquito. The minister says that so far the situation is under control, with Santiago, Santo Domingo and the National District being the areas with the most infections.

Atallah explained residents in the Dominican Republic can do a lot to prevent the disease and get ahead of the great wave of dengue that is circulating around the world.

Since the beginning of 2023, ongoing transmission, combined with an unexpected spike in dengue cases has resulted in close to a historic high of over five million cases and more than 5000 dengue-related deaths reported in over 80 countries/territories and five WHO regions: Africa, Americas, South-East Asia, Western Pacific and Eastern Mediterranean Regions globally.

Close to 80% of these cases, or 4.1 million, have been reported in the Region of the Americas.
