
President Luis Abinader gave the keynote speech during the opening of the Dominican Republic Logistics Summit 2024. Business people are gathering 17-18 April 2024 at the Hotel Embajador in Santo Domingo under the theme “Connecting Global Opportunities.”
The Dominican Republic is taking steps to consolidate its position as a world-class logistics hub. The country’s strategic location, cuts export and import times to and from Europe, the US, Asia, Central America and South America.
President Abinader emphasized the DR is capitalizing on its privileged geographic position, excellent infrastructure, connectivity, export free zone and logistics services, with more than 300,000 square meters already serving international logistics.
“Global connectivity not only benefits our exporters and importers, but also attracts foreign investments, generating employment and promoting the development of industrial clusters,” highlighted President Abinader.
“The Dominican Republic continues to be positioned in the top 10 countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region with the best performance in terms of maritime connectivity,” the President emphasized. He mentioned that there are direct flights to more than 55 countries and 170 international destinations.
“Two of the eight international airports that operate in the country, the Las Americas International Airport and the Punta Cana International Airport, have positioned themselves as important distribution centers for foreign companies,” he explained.
Air cargo in 2023 was around 30 million kilos. He stressed that this constant flow of goods by air is testimony to the agility and important connectivity that characterizes the national logistics system.
Regarding maritime connectivity, President Abinader said that, thanks to the efficiency and notable capacity of the country’s ports, at the end of 2023 the Dominican Republic had achieved an important milestone, and mobilized an impressive volume of 2.3 million TEUs of freight containers.
The logistics summit is organized by the Association of Shipowners of the Dominican Republic (ANRD), the Customs Agency (DGA) and the National Trade Facilitation Committee (CNFC) and has the backing of more than 50 leading and allied companies and entities of the logistics sector. Within the framework of DRLS2024, topics on connectivity, innovation, sustainability, logistics opportunities and nearshoring are addressed by national and international experts, through a series of keynote conferences and discussion panels.
The event is held as a central point for the creation of business relations through different business rounds, as well as visits to areas of the highest level logistics activity.
