President Luis Abinader will be the first sitting President to participate in a debate with opposition candidates on the evening of Wednesday, 24 April 2024. President Luis Abinader seeks to be reelected. For more than 30 years, the National Young Entrepreneurs Association (Anje) had sought to organize the debate. One of the participants, Leonel Fernandez had rejected to participate when invited when in office. He confirmed his participation this time after Abinader accepted to participate in the debate.
An economist and businessman before reaching the Presidency in 2020, 56-year old Abinader seeks to be reelected for his first time. He enters into the debate with over 20 points above his main contender, three-term Leonel Fernandez. 70-year old Fernandez is known as a sage politician and very talented public speaker. In the 2024 presidential election, he is running for the People’s Force, after splitting with the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) when he was not chosen presidential candidate into the 2020 presidential election. The party would go on to lose the election to the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) that posted President Luis Abinader.
Third in most polls, candidate, 52-year old Abel Martinez is a two-time mayor of Santiago and former president of the Chamber of Deputies. He is running for the PLD.
The debate will be aired on national television from 8 to 10pm from the UNPHU university auditorium.
