New guidelines for hosting a Dominican Week in embassies abroad

The Ministry of Foreign Relations under Minister Roberto Alvarez has put together a manual for Dominican missions abroad on how to organize a Dominican Week abroad. Dominican Week is modeled on the experiences of the American Chamber of Commerce and innovating Dominican ambassadors abroad. The Standardized Guide for the Celebration of Dominican Week Abroad is part of the Ministry of Foreign Relations efforts to promote the Dominican Republic abroad and strengthen economic, trade, political, social and cultural ties in countries where the DR has a diplomatic and/or consular presence.

Minister Roberto Álvarez said the guide seeks to standardize the experience to facilitate the replicating of the positive experiences. “With this guide we launch a strategy that allows us as the Dominican Government to institutionalize and standardize this type of action, to show the best of us and attract the best of the world.”

He explained the guide for future Dominican Week events was prepared by the members of the Institutional Committee made up of Vice-Ministries and Directorates of MIREX. The committee members analyzed the results of past Dominican Week events held by Dominican missions abroad. The research looked into the positive impact the bilateral events have garnered in regard to political relations, access to international markets, trade and cooperation agreements.

Minister Alvarez recognized the group of visionaries who prioritized rapprochement with the diaspora, and the strengthening of the political and economic relationship. He acknowledged the seed was planted in 1992 when the first Semana Dominicana was held in the United States, “our main trading partner,” thanks to the vision of the late businessmen Luis Heredia Bonetti and Victor Thomen.

At the event, to launch the guide, the Ministry of Foreign Relations also recognized the efforts of William Malamud, executive vice president of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic; and Roberto Herrera, past president of AmCham that have been key in keeping the annual event going.
