The judiciary and the alleged dark side of five legislators

A handful of legislators with cases pending in the Dominican judiciary, most for drug trafficking and asset laundering, were reelected to their posts in Congress during the 19 May 2024 general election. Hoy, Listin Diario and Diario Libre carried stories with details on the past or present accusations against these legislators, most elected for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).

Being a legislator grants privileged judicial treatment, as their cases can only be heard by a special Supreme Court of Justice judge.

Hoy provides details on the winners of congressional seats who have or had cases in the judiciary and the issues that have them in the spotlight.

Sergio “Gory” Moya, PRM, Voting District 3. Controversy: He is one of those identified in the Calamar Case, as one of the coordinators of an alleged extortion scheme against betting shops.

Faustina Guerrero (Grey Maldonado) from El Seibo (PRM). Controversy: She is one of those involved in the Operation Falcón, where Attorney General Office prosecutors (Public Ministry) claim that the congresswoman belongs to an alleged international cocaine trafficking network.

Nelson Rafael Marmolejos Gil, Voting District 3 of Santiago, for the PRM. Controversy: He is investigated for alleged links with a money laundering network from drug trafficking, the Falcon Operation, as named by the state prosecutors.

Gregorio Domínguez Domínguez won the seat for Voting District 1 of Santiago on the PRM ticket. Controversy: The Public Ministry has accused him of violence against a US woman.

Héctor Darío Féliz Féliz ran but did not win again in Pedernales for the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD). Controversy: Féliz was identified by the Public Ministry, in 2021, for allegedly transporting a wanted drug trafficker in his vehicle. He is investigated as part of Operation Falcón.

Another incumbent PRM deputy, Rosa Maria Pilarte, who is being tried for money laundering by the Supreme Court of Justice, did not seek reelection.
