The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Higher Education (MESCYT) is making strides to strengthen educational and research collaboration with Cuba and Vietnam, according to Higher Education Minister Franklin Garcia.

On 3 June 2024, Minister Garcia met with his Cuban counterpart, Walter Baluja, in Santo Domingo. Discussions focused on potential areas of cooperation, including:

Exchanging best practices in teacher training
Implementing innovative educational technologies
Developing joint scientific research projects

A press release issued by MESCYT highlighted the initiative as a means to address shared challenges and promote knowledge-based sustainable development.

On 24 May 2024, Minister Garcia received the Dominican ambassador to Vietnam, Jaime Yorquis Francisco Rodriguez. “Our goal is to connect Dominican universities with their Vietnamese counterparts,” Garcia stated. “Vietnam’s significant advancements in higher education, science, and innovation make this partnership crucial.”

Ambassador Francisco Rodriguez echoed this intention, emphasizing the desire to establish a “strong and fluid relationship” between the Dominican Republic and Vietnam. He pointed to the “remarkable human, social, and commercial development” of both nations, along with their commitment to high-quality education.

Francisco Rodriguez stressed the importance of Dominican youth having access to high-level training opportunities in Vietnam, with MESCYT’s support.

MESCYT currently maintains partnerships with over 50 universities across 15 countries. During the 2024 international scholarship competition, students were granted access to 549 academic programs.
