President Luis Abinader could return to Europe this month to participate in a peace conference in Switzerland.
On 2 June, Abinader returned from an around 10-day work-vacation in Europe with his family. When in Portugal, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa urged President Abinader to attend the peace conference in Ukraine on 15 and 16 June 2024 in Lucerne, Switzerland. Abinader said that Spanish President Pedro Sanchez has also asked him to attend the conference.
An editorial in El Caribe is cautious about Abinader attending the conference. The editorialist mentions that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not been invited to the conference. Xi Ping of China nor Joe Biden of the US are likely to attend.
The El Caribe editorial writer alerts:
“The steps of diplomacy are difficult to avoid, but not impossible to understand, because all of Abinader’s decisions regarding this conference of peace must start with a premise: be careful not to sign agreements that erroneously compromise our external policy.
“If Abinader finally travels to Switzerland, then that it be that he maintain the same posture as Pope Francisco. That is that he be there to ensure that those who hold the power to call in the weapons to detain the conflict, and to immediately end this conflagration in which the only one who stands is the Ukrainian people, which places the greatest number of deaths, displaced people and refugees.
The editorial explains that Abinader may attend because he has always highlighted the positive nature of the Dominican Republic presence in international forums that advocate for fomenting a diplomacy that faces trade and economic development, on fundamental issues such as migration and the promotion of democratic values.
But the editorial writer calls for caution in accepting this invitation for reasons that the news service Bloomberg expresses in a recent coverage on the peace conference, highlighting that Russia was not invited, and China and Brazil are backing another similar event.
