President Luis Abinader announced he will be travel to Switzerland for the Ukraine Peace Conference. The international peace summit will be held at the Burgenstock Resort near Lucerne Lake in Switzerland on Saturday, 15 and 16 June 2024. Russia was not invited to attend the event.
Abinader described the trip as one of 48 hours. He says he is taking advantage of the occasion to concert bilateral meetings with several other heads of state that are attending. He said the peace conference includes a dinner and a complete day for networking.
The conference follows a series of four earlier international meetings on the Russian-Ukrainian war and is to be hosted by Swiss President Viola Amherd. Amherd has explained in motivating to attend that the conference is intended to create a platform for dialogue at which the first step would be to discuss how peace could be achieved in Ukraine. She has said the conference will not be about peace in Ukraine in the narrow sense, but more about humanitarian issues, nuclear safety, freedom of navigation and food security. “We want to build trust and seek solutions to these issues, which are important for the civilian population and then also for peace later on,” she has explained.
Abinader had been cautioned not to attend on grounds that Russia is a member of the UN National Security Council and the Dominican Republic’s most pressing international conflict is the critical situation in neighboring Haiti that depends on UN support for a peace-keeping mission. Russia nor China are attending the Ukrainian conference.
As reported, around 100 heads of government will be attending the conference. In arguing about the networking opportunity the conference represents, President Abinader mentioned a long list of candidates for bilateral meetings. On his named list are the Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida. Attending for European Union are President Emmanuel Macron of France, Chanceller Karl Nehammer of Austria, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of Sweden, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of Luxembourg, Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson of Iceland, Prime Minister Simon Harris of Ireland, Prime Minister Olaf Scholz of Germany, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, the president of the European Union Council Charles Michel, the secretary general of the European Union Council Thérèse Blanchet, the Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk, President Alexander Stubb of Finland, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway, President Pedro Sanchez of Spain, President Katerina Sakellaropoulou of Greece, President Sergio Mattarella of Italy and President Edgars Rinkēvičs of Latvia.
