Judge Deiby Timoteo Peguero Jiménez of the Seventh Court of Instruction has set the start date of 5 August 2024 for the opening of the trial to hear charges against Elizabeth Silverio Silien, the woman who is accused of using fake degrees to pose as a neuroscientist. The woman, who has a high school degree, was so successful in this role, that she was even invited as a consultant to the National Congress when the autism bill was discussed.
Silverio exhibited several degrees from highly-reputed universities in her office as she posed as a psychologist, psychological therapist and neuroscientist. She was the director of the Centro de Terapias Neurocognitivas y Psicopedagogicas Knowledge Land (Kogland).
Silverio told reporters that she will prove her innocence during the court hearings.
Silverio was first exposed as a possible fraud by investigative journalist Nuria Piera in May 2023. Piera’s investigation found that Silverio had claimed to have degrees from several universities, including the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Oxford in England. However, when Piera contacted these universities, they said that Silverio had never been a student there.
After the Nuria Piera revelation, the Ministry of Public Health filed a complaint against Silverio, accusing her of practicing medicine without a license. Silverio was arrested in June 2023 and has been under preventive custody measures since then. She faces charges of falsifying documents and practicing medicine without a license. If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in prison.
