What’s all the fuss about the Under-17 Women’s Youth World Cup? It is that the Dominican Republic, a country with no tradition in soccer, for the first time is hosting a soccer world championship. The top 16 teams in the world will be participating in the tournament that will be played in Santo Domingo and the country’s second-largest city, Santiago de los Caballeros.
The U-17 World Cup to be held from 16 October to 3 November 2024 will follow the unprecedented qualifying of the Dominican national soccer team to the Paris Olympics, a major feat for the emerging sport in the country better known for its baseball and women’s volleyball team sports.
As part of the preparations for the U-17 World Cup, Tani, the mascot of the FIFA World Cup is on tour. Last week, she visited Vice President Raquel Peña. This week a major event is held on Tuesday, 16 July to introduce the mascot to the local media. The mascot is a cartoon figure of the Rosa de Bayahibe, the rare but very lovely national flower.
While the U-17 World Cup set for October 2024 will be the first world soccer championship held in the Dominican Republic, it will also be the third U-17 Women’s World Cup held in the Concacaf region.
The 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup will feature 16 teams, with the top two finishers in each group advancing to the quarterfinals.
All 32 matches of this tournament will be played in just two stadiums. One of these is the FC Cibao Stadium located on the grounds of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in Santiago de los Caballeros which seats around 8,000 and is an artificial surface. The opening and closing games, and others will take place at the Félix Sánchez Stadium in Santo Domingo, which seats around 27,000 and is natural grass.
Each of the two stadiums will host 12 group games, two quarterfinals and a semifinal. Félix Sánchez Stadium will host the Third-Place Match and the Championship Game on Sunday, 3 November 2024.
