There have been nearly a thousand cases of dengue (“bonebreak”) fever so far this year, a reminder for people to keep to preventive measures.
Dengue is only transmitted by one type of mosquito, the Aedes aegypti, and that mosquito breeds only in stagnant waters. The mosquito is fairly easy to kill. Simply remove any stagnant water in an area, and the mosquito population goes way down.
Here in the Dominican Republic, there have been over 8,000 suspected cases and 1,000 confirmed cases, with, sadly nine fatalities.
On more than one occasion, DR1 News has reminded its readers to remove all possible water vessels from yards and driveways: even dried leaves, uncovered water tanks, or cisterns, old tires (tyres), and empty bottles. A teaspoon of water can produce thousands of mosquitos. Prevention is the key.
