Sports tourism is big in the Dominican Republic. The next major tournament is the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup set for October 2024.
The Dominican Republic will play in Group A in the upcoming World Cup for U17 Women with games to at stadiums in the capital city and Santiago, the country’s second-largest city from 16 October to 3 November 2024.
The hosts, the Dominican Republic will face New Zealand, Nigeria, and Ecuador. Teams playing in Group B are twice champion Spain, United States, Colombia and South Korea. Group C teams are North Korea, Mexico, England, and Kenya. Group D is composed of Japan, Zambia, Brazil and Poland.
This world event has been on the calendar of the International Football Association Federation (FIFA) since 2008. Former champions are North Korea, Spain, South Korea, Japan, and France.
The commitment of the Dominican Republic to this enormous event is evident in the remodeling of stadiums in Santo Domingo and Santiago, as well as the improvements being made to other fields in Moca and La Vega. The Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium is undergoing a total remake, with new seating, lighting, field of play, track, and all of the other facilities at the venue. Santiago’s Cibao F.C. Stadium, recently began using its remodeled stadium with a World Cup-standard playing field, new lighting, more seating, and new bleachers, plus an amazing new scoreboard.
It would be expected if this tournament is a success as expected, more international football tournaments will be held in the country to take advantage of the facilities, the air connectivity, tourism attractions and ample accommodations available.
