Dominican Republic recognized for excellence in non-communicable disease management

The Dominican Republic was honored with the prestigious NCD Task Force Award 2024 for its outstanding achievements in combating non-communicable diseases. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases, are non-transmissible diseases of often long duration. Examples of NCDs include mental health conditions, stroke, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease.

Health Minister Víctor Atallah accepted the award on behalf of the nation during the ongoing United Nations General Assembly.

Dr. Atallah highlighted the significance of the award, emphasizing that it underscores the country’s commitment to public health and its pioneering approach to addressing non-communicable diseases. The minister specifically mentioned the “Saludable y Sabroso” initiative, a groundbreaking program that promotes healthy eating habits while respecting Dominican culinary traditions.

The Minister also credited the “Más Salud y Más Esperanza de Vida” program for significant advancements in cardiovascular care. This initiative, part of the Hearts strategy, has successfully reduced the burden of non-communicable diseases through a localized approach that incorporates indigenous products and tailored diets.

Dr. Atallah’s participation in various UN events, including a panel discussion on strengthening healthcare systems for cardiovascular diseases, further solidified the Dominican Republic’s position as a global leader in public health. The minister’s engagement with international experts and policymakers underscored the country’s dedication to fostering collaboration and sharing best practices.

Speaking during the Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and Global Health at the United Nations, Dominican Republic Health Minister Víctor Atallah outlined the country’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage by 2030. He emphasized the implementation of concrete actions, such as the Universal Health and Social Security Access Policy, which is part of the government’s central strategy for 2025-2028. This initiative aims to ensure the right to health for all citizens.

The success of these initiatives is attributed to strong collaboration between government agencies, healthcare providers, and the community.
