Abinader inaugurates the renovated La Vega fresh produce market

La Vega doesn’t have a mayor after President Luis Abinader named Kevin Cruz, who was on the job only since April 2024, to the position of Sports Minister. Who will replace him is still being worked out after the deputy mayor resigned.

Nevertheless, President Luis Abinader was in La Vega this past weekend to deliver the city’s new public market.

For centuries, before Nacional, Sirena and Bravo supermarkets, Dominican households obtained their food and household needs from public markets, located, for the most part, in the center of each city or town. The Mercado Modelo on Mella St. in Santo Domingo was one; the Mercado on El Sol St. in Santiago, recently hit by a fire, another.

In La Vega, their “mercado” was devastated by a fire several years ago, and this past weekend, President Luis Abinader, cut the ribbon and delivered the newly rebuilt and remodeled Public Market to the people of La Vega.

This market has 328 stalls that offer products to their customers. According to the Minister of Public Works, the project cost RD$485 million.

The original structure was built towards the end of the Trujillo regime, but the market site itself was utilized by the people for centuries to sell their wares.

An idea of just what will be available can be seen in the 135 stalls dedicated to vegetables, fruits, and other produce; 24 stalls will sell poultry; 6 flower stalls, and one pharmacy. There are also colmados, food stalls, and cafeterias.
