Exports to South Korea increase; Push for closer relations

Exports with South Korea have significantly increased during the Abinader administration. Dominican ambassador Federico Cuello says that data from the Customs Agency (DGA) indicates that exports were up 253% from 2020 to 2023. The numbers for exports are US$67 million in 2020, increasing to US$236 million by 2023. “And that is without the Economic Partnership Agreement that was proposed to the Dominican government by South Korea at the end of June 2024,” says Ambassador Cuello. Cuello has been the Dominican ambassador since April 2021.

The Dominican Republic exported ferroalloys and mainly finished products to Korea – medical devices, electronics, used batteries for recycling. The DR is a main importer of Korean goods, with Hyundai, Samsung, LG among the leading brands in the local market, with imports, mainly transport vehicles, upwards of US$400 million a year.
